The Owners

The Owners is a black comedy about a young family desperately short on money. They are forced to give up their flat in Almaty and move to a house in the countryside, which they inherited from their mother. However, problems arise when they arrive and find that someone has been occupying the house in their absence, someone with good friends in high places who have the power to control the cumbersome bureaucracy. This, along with a conspiratorial alliance of townspeople, does not help the young family in the slightest. Following the rules does not seem to be a viable option for the two teenage boys and their epileptic sister, who urgently need a place to live. gil

Adilkhan Yerzhanov (b. 1982) studied directing at the Kazakh National Academy of Arts and received a grant to continue his studies in New York. Already in 1999 he received critical acclaim for the first Kazakh animation series, Kozy-Korpesh and Bayan- Sulu. His first feature film, Rieltor (2011), was nominated for Best Film at Dubai International Film Festival.
