600 Miles

At the start of 600 Miles we witness a quite uncomfortable scene at an arms dealer in Arizona, right next to the Mexican border. With this scene we are introduced to the world of Arnulfo, a young man who spends his time smuggling weapons across the border to his uncle's cartel in Mexico. This is a brutal world where he is at bottom of the social ladder.

The job looks relatively simple, but eventually police agent Hank Harris (played by Tim Roth) finds out about what Arnulfo and his American companion are up to. After a violent confrontation, Harris suddenly finds himself in the trunk of Arnulfo's car on the way to Mexico.
In a well-balanced manner and slow pace we are presented a story that you might think you know the ending of. That is, up until the final scene, which must be one of the most surprising finales on film in recent years.

Director Gabriel Ripstein has made a distinctive debut as director. Managing to make a film about arms smuggling containing such a small amount of shots fired, is nothing but impressive. The drive from the United States and into Mexico is also masterfully directed. The main characters have ended up in a situation that is unfavourable for them both, but none of them take the opportunity to put the blame on the other.

Gabriel Ripstein debuted as a director with 600 Miles, which won him the Best First Film award under this year’s film festival in Berlin. Currently he is working on a new film in Mexico, starring Eric Roberts and Kevin Pollak. Gabriel Ripstein's dad, Arturo, is a well-known director in their home country, and started his career as an assistant for Luis Bunuel.
