Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie is described as an animated science fiction-film with elements from action movies and spy thrillers. The film is based on the manga series from 1989 with the same name, written and illustrated by Masamune Shirov.

The story takes place in a near future, not long after the Fourth World War has ended in a world where many people in developed countries have become cyborgs. The film continues the story arc from Ghost in the Shell: Arise, and takes place in the fictional Japanese city, Newport City. Unrest in the general public and the assassination of the Japanese Prime Minister are central to the story, described as the ”greatest event since the war.” It is up to the leader of the Public Security Section 9, Motoko Kusanagi, to discover what really happened and the true nature of the murder. She and her co-workers are aided by the Prime Minister’s own son, Osamy Fujimoto.

Kazuchika Kise is born in Japan and has been involved in several Ghost in Shell: Arise productions as a director. Ha has broad experience as an animated going all the way back the mid-80. Kazuya Nomura has directed episodes in several animations series, Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie is his long feature debut as a director.
