Hissein Habré, a Chadian Tragedy
From 1982 to 1990, more than 40 000 people are believed to have been killed in Chad under Hissein Habré’s reign of terror. In 2013 the former dictator was arrested in neighboring Senegal, where he was living in exile. After a long and fierce struggle from survivors of the terror, Habré was prosecuted and put to trial in Senegal for crimes against the humanity in an African Union-backed court. This landmark trial – the first time in modern history that one country's domestic courts have prosecuted a former leader of another country for human rights crimes – can prove to have great consequences for how countries in the future may prosecute their leaders. In this documentary we follow the struggle of the survivors and the bereaved for justice and reconciliation in a divided country. Per Eirik Gilsvik
