One of the greatest classics from Studio Ghibli from the master director Isao Takahata, Only Yesterday was one of the first Ghibli-films to tell a story not mainly aimed at small children. The film tells a complex coming-of-age tale, wrapped in the same exquisite animations that we know from Hayao Miyazaki. We follow Taeko, a 27-year old woman with a rather normal, but also unfulfilling office job. When she travels on vacation to visit her family in the countryside, the childhood memories suddenly start coming back to her. Only Yesterday gives a rich portrayal of how it was to grow up in Japan in the 1960s and 70s while at the same time telling a universal tale of the difficulty of finding oneself and figuring out what you really want from life. The film was re-launched in North America in 2016 to rave reviews and is a must for all fans of Studio Ghibli. Kristian Takvam Kindt

Isao Takahata is, alongside Hayao Miyazaki, the most well-known anime-director from japan. He is the man behind masterpieces like Grave of the Fireflies, The Tale of Princess Kaguya and Only Yesterday.
