Burning
This masterpiece from one of South Korea’s leading directors is based on Haruki Murakami’s short story «Barn Burning».
The farm boy Jongsu dreams of becoming a writer but is currently unemployed. By chance, he meets Haemi, a girl he knew from his school days who dreams of becoming an actress. After a few joyful reunions, Haemi leaves for a trip to Africa, asking Jongsu to look after her cat while she’s gone. Jongsu’s fantasies about Haemi begin to spiral out of control, and when she returns, she is accompanied by the young and wealthy Ben. The love triangle intensifies as Jongsu’s passion for Haemi grows, and when she suddenly disappears, his search for her becomes an obsession.
Burning is lyrical, poetic, and mysterious. Pay close attention from the very first shot — a key to understanding the story lies hidden in an early scene. This is a film that lingers, growing deeper and more haunting long after the credits roll.
