A naked woman is found dead way out in the no-man’s land of the Mongolian plains. A young police officer is stationed to stand guard over the body overnight. To his aid comes a local shepherd woman who is accustomed to guarding her cattle from the wolves and wilderness. She is known in the local vernacular as a «dinosaur»: a single woman in her mid-30’s, living alone, with no man or children. A very cold night grows warmer and more intimate than the young police officer had imaged.

Chinese film director Quan’an Wang delivers another of his acclaimed stories of the Mongolian steppe. Egg starts off as an easily recognisable crime story. However, it soon takes a different direction as it lets us get close to a young woman with her own determined plans for her future. The beautiful steppe scenery, nature itself, and the age-old questions of each individual’s place in the grand scheme of things, all gradually develop as distinct themes of the film.
