In My Mother's Skin
Horror, fantasy, and drama, in a combination reminiscent of Guillermo del Toro's Pan’s Labyrinth, transports us back to the end of World War II in the Philippines.
The Japanese occupiers are in the process of withdrawing, and the Americans are advancing. The prosperous businessman and father of the teenage girl Tala has left the family estate in the countryside in an attempt to secure the family's safety through his connections. However, the mother has fallen ill, and she and her little brother are mostly left to fend for themselves. The temptation to explore the forest around the estate, which they were previously not allowed to do, becomes too great. Here, they not only discover remnants of the horrors of war but also something from another world. It puts the entire family in great danger. With beautiful cinematography, a smooth storytelling flow, stylish special effects, and strong acting performances, you get a Filipino folkloric horror story that at times sends shivers down your spine.
