Miúcha, The Voice of Bossa Nova
This wonderful documentary tells the story of Miúcha, female Bossa Nova pioneer who was overshadowed by the male musicians in her life, including her husband João Gilberto.
Bossa Nova was born in Rio de Janeiro in the late '50s and early '60s. A relaxed offspring of samba, with its own special beat. Joao Gilberto was credited as its founder, and a number of musicians embraced the new style, including the pianist/singer Chico Buarque, who was Miúcha's brother and had great ambitions for a singing career. She was well on her way when she met Gilberto at the Canedelaria bar in Paris in 1963. Bonds were forged, they married, had a child together, but unfortunately, she ended up in the shadow of the master until they divorced. That's when she truly began to flourish as a singer and created a big name for herself. Through a combination of archival material, photographs, home videos, and cassette recordings, we get to know a strong personality, a great singer, and a fascinating woman in every way. The whole story about her is collected and presented by her nephew Daniel Zarvos and Bossa Nova enthusiast Lilliane Mutti.
