Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms
History and mythology is closely intertwined in this Chinese fantasy epic, based on a novel from the 1500s. Parallels can be drawn to The Lord of the Rings, and this year’s festival gives a unique possibility to see it at the cinema.
This is the first film in a grand fantasy trilogy from China, based on the 16th-century novel Investiture of the Gods written by Xu Zhonglin. The story is told through beautiful tableaux featuring magnificent landscapes. From snow-covered, frozen winter scenes to rivers and green valleys in the summertime. There are intricate cities with multi-story houses with sharp, upward-turned corners. In other words, this is a highly lavish production – one of the most expensive films ever made in China – with fantastic special effects and well-crafted costumes. It features conflicts between different factions, battle scenes, dragons and demons, and much, much more.
