Nocturnes
In the dense forests of the Eastern Himalayas, the moths are whispering something to us. In the darkness of the night, two dedicated climate scientists shed light on this secret universe and the consequences of their movements.
The winner of the Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival is a beautiful and meditative exploration of the work of two climate scientists studying the twilight moth, a species also found in Norway. However, here we are in the Himalayas, and the goal is to determine whether the moth is moving to higher altitudes due to climate change. Before dawn, the scientists set up their illuminated canvas at different mountain elevations to observe which moth species they could find. What they discover is both fascinating and alarming—an ecosystem in imbalance and negative transformation. One of this year’s most beautiful yet also most unsettling climate films.
