The Wayward Cloud
An erotic musical, and a film like nothing you’ve ever seen before.
The Wayward Cloud is an unusual love story, and possibly Tsai Ming-liang’s funniest film to date. The characters’ dreams and nightmares are told through grand musical scenes, spiced with Taiwanese music from the 1960s. The story is set in an apartment complex in the heart of Taipei, which is suffering from an acute water shortage. The authorities recommend that people eat watermelons to quench their thirst.
We meet the characters from Tsai’s film What Time Is It There? Hsiao-kang has left his job as a watch seller in favor of a career as a porn actor. Shiang-chyi has returned from Paris, and one day they start a romantic relationship. What will happen when Shiang-chyi finds out what Hsiao-kang does for a living?
«A superbly crafted film. Technically speaking, nothing much happens in it, yet it tells a potent story about what it is to be human. If that doesn’t sound like your kind of thing, you might be surprised by how easily it will draw you in. It’s a passionate, sensual piece of work, with intense performances from the two leads.»
