Daibosatsu Pass

Some may know Kenji Misumi for his four (of six) films based on the legendary manga Lone Wolf and Cub (edited together into Shogun Assassin in 1980), but he made many other significant contributions to the samurai genre, directing entries in series such as Sleepy Eyes of Death, Zatôichi, Jirôkichi, and a long list of standalone titles. He also directed Buddha, Japan’s very first 70mm film, which became a major commercial success in his home country.

Like all adaptations of Nakazato’s novels, this one begins with the opening chapter of the first book, where Ryunosuke Tsukue’s fateful actions set events into motion. The film naturally ends on a highly dramatic note, making it impossible not to watch the next part.

The Daibosatsu Pass Trilogy

Daibosatsu Pass is the first part of the trilogy often referred to as the Daibosatsu Pass Trilogy or the Satan’s Sword Trilogy. All films will be screened at Cinemateket in Oslo during the festival.

The film is also part of a special series at Cinemateket focusing on samurai films.
