Daibosatsu Pass: The Final Chapter
Last chapter in the Daibosatsu Pass Trilogy.
A full year after The Dragon God of Daibosatsu Pass, part three finally arrived: Daibosatsu Pass: The Final Chapter. This time, a brand-new director was introduced — Kazuo Mori. With nearly 70 feature films to his name, Mori was no novice, and he guided the trilogy to its intense and entirely natural conclusion.
Ryunosuke Tsukue is increasingly tormented by his inner demons and tries to find peace, but life and fate have other plans. Raizo Ichikawa delivers a remarkable performance as Tsukue throughout the trilogy, portraying his transformation from an emotionless killer to a tortured soul haunted by his victims. As in the two previous films, the screenplay was written by Teinosuke Kinugasa, the director of A Page of Madness (screened at Cinemateket this spring) and Gate of Hell — the latter winning two Oscars and the Grand Prix in Cannes, while A Page of Madness was the very first Japanese film to receive regular distribution in the West.
