North South Man Woman

When North Korean women flee to modern South Korea, Han Yujin steps in – the matchmaker who aims to unify a divided nation, one couple at a time.

This is the premise of Morten Traavik and Sun Kim’s documentary about North Korean defectors and their encounters with South Korean men. Han Yujin has started a dating agency that facilitates these meetings. When everyday life catches up with the new couples, cultural differences become strikingly clear: to many South Korean men, the women appear idealized, almost mystical, while the women themselves carry trauma and long primarily for stability and respect. The documentary approaches its subject with the seriousness it deserves – but also with gentle humor.
