Under the Flags, the Sun
Who owns history if it’s shaped by propaganda? This documentary explores Stroessner’s regime in Paraguay – one of Latin America’s longest-lasting dictatorships.
The film is composed entirely of archival footage from state-controlled newsreels, public TV broadcasts and propaganda films, allowing the material to speak for itself. On the surface, it paints a picture of strength, unity and wealth – but beneath it lies fear, oppression and exile. Director Juanjo Pereira manipulates the footage himself – reversing time and distorting the images – to create a disturbing portrait of a country moving backwards instead of forwards. In doing so, the film forces the viewer to reflect on how media shapes identity and rewrites history.
