The Secret Reading Club of Kabul

A powerful documentary about a reading club for women, in a society that has taken everything from them.

Taliban's return five years ago removed every trace of women's rights in Afghanistan. In a society where half the country has lost the right to work, education, and freedom of expression, a small group of young girls forms a reading circle inspired by Anne Frank's fate. Director Shakiba Adil weaves her own background as a refugee from the country into the story of the women in the reading club, who manage to preserve their dignity and hope in a society that has stripped them of everything.
