Cannes Favorite ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT to Open This Year’s Films from the South

On Saturday, November 9, Films from the South 2024 will open with the Grand Prix winner from this year's Cannes Film Festival, ALL WE IMAGINE IS LIGHT.

Prepare to be transported to Mumbai, into a beautifully shot, poetic story of the lives of two women in the immense metropolis.

The stoic Prabha and the younger, more whimsical Anu are roommates and nurses. Both yearn for love and intimacy. The man Prabha was married off to at a young age moved to Germany shortly after the wedding, and she has hardly heard from him since. Anu, on the other hand, is in love with a Muslim boy and is not enthusiastic about her parents' intention to marry her off to someone else.

The film has an almost hypnotic quality, with its understated expression drawing you deep into Mumbai's nightlife and the heartfelt conversations between lovers, friends, and colleagues.

ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT is directed by Indian filmmaker and artist Payal Kapadia (b. 1986). She has created several short films that have premiered at festivals around the world. Her feature film debut came with A NIGHT OF KNOWING NOTHING, which premiered at Cannes in 2021. This is her second feature film, and the first Indian film directed by a woman to be shown in the main competition at Cannes, not to mention that it is the first Indian film in the main program since 1994.
