The Critical Room: A new academic colonialism // THE SHADOW SCHOLARS

Eloise King's debut film, The Shadow Scholars, addresses a unique phenomenon: thousands of Kenyan academics make a living writing papers for students in the West. Oxford professor Patricia Kingori travels to Kenya to get to the bottom of the extent of this phenomenon. 

After the film, we invite you to a conversation with the film's director, Eloise King, about how she approached making the film, her collaboration with Professor Patricia Kingori, and what this unusual but surprisingly widespread form of academic cheating says about deep-rooted colonial structures in the international community.

• Eloise King is a British filmmaker with Caribbean roots. She has previously made several films for television. Her first feature film, The Shadow Scholars, won the Special Mention Award at last year's London Film Festival.
