Girls Will Be Girls
At a boarding school in the Himalayas, 16-year-old Mira discovers both desire and romance. However, her sexual awakening is cut short by her protective mother, who never experienced the same liberation.
Mira is appointed as the first female head prefect at her school in northern India. This is a responsibility she does not take lightly, and she is tasked with maintaining order among her classmates. When the new student, Sri, joins, he becomes a threat to her star status at the school and stirs up feelings in her that she is not ready for, which also affects her already difficult relationship with her mother, Anila.
Debut director Shuchi Talati portrays the world in Girls Will Be Girls with precision, making it clear that this is an environment and people she knows well. The film beautifully celebrates the freedom that comes from accepting who you are. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won an audience award and an acting award.
«Girls Will Be Girls supports its heroines by acknowledging that the foremost battles for liberation take place at home, in school, or alone in a room while blasting your favorite song.»
