For many years, Norway has supported filmmakers from around the world through Sørfond. The fund is financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and administered by the Films from the South Festival in collaboration with the Norwegian Film Institute.

During this year’s festival, you can experience several films that both challenge and move – works that, in many ways, see the light of day thanks to Norwegian taxpayers.

This year’s selection of Sørfond-supported films is wide-ranging: from an important and timely historical drama from Palestine, to a film about a strike in a garment factory in Myanmar, a reckoning with colonialism in Indonesia, an existential feminist drama from Bhutan, and a powerful father–son portrait from Egypt.

Program

  • Palestine 36 (Palestine, Annemarie Jacir)
  • MA - Cry of Silence (Myanmar, The Maw Naing)
  • I, the Song (Bhutan, Dechen Roder)
  • This City Is a Battlefield (Indonesia, Mouly Surya)
  • My Father’s Scent (Egypt, Mo Siam)

The goal of Sørfond is to support filmmakers in countries where freedom of expression is under pressure. Through international co-productions, the fund promotes artistic freedom across borders and amplifies the voices of those who are often not heard.

Since its establishment in 2011, Sørfond has supported over 100 films – many of them award winners at major festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, and Sundance.
