On December 1 2002, Dilawar, an Afghan taxi driver, is arrested. Ten days later, he is tortured to death in American custody. Using Dilawar’s story as a backdrop, Taxi to the Dark Side shows how the abuse of prisoners is systemised. We recognise the same treatment from Guantanamo and the atrocities at Abu Ghraib. At the same time, connections right up to the top of the American political elite are suggested. Taxi to the Dark Side is part of the worldwide and critically acclaimed series Why Democracy? and won an Oscar as Best Documentary in 2008. It is a down to earth and honest film that is very powerful – highly convincing without being bombastic. eyk
