Ten years after Split Wide Open, Dev Benegal returns with beautiful images that transport the audience to the wide desert landscapes of Rajasthan, India. A young man flees from his family business of selling hair oil, to transport an old Chevy carrying a mobile movie-theatre across the desert. Along the way he picks up a couple of hitchhikers who are to prove themselves essential for his mission. The characters exist in an at times surreal chain of events, where people as well as ghosts appear out of the desert to go to the cinema, and where hardboiled bandits are made to co-operate for an occasional bottle of hair oil. bb
