The Critical Room: Journalists in Conflict Zones
JOURNALISTS IN CONFLICT ZONES
That journalists are exposed to danger when reporting from conflict zones around the world is nothing new. However, the past five years over 70 Mexican journalitsts and photographers have been killed in the country when trying to report on the narco cartels and the ongoing drug war. The journalists live under a constant pressure from narco cartels and corrupt politicians and police forces. The documentary Cocaine Unwrapped explores the Latin American drug war and exposes its human costs.
We focus on Mexigo and the drug war when we debate the safety of journalists and the media’s challenges in conflict zones. How has the media’s working conditions changed in recent years? Do we understand the full scope of the ongoing drug war in Mexico? Editor of the Norwegian Le Monde Diplomatique Truls Lie will lead the conversation between director of Cocaine Unwrapped Rachel Seifert, Lars Leer from Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences, journalist and publisher Anders Heger and Kaja Hundvin from the Norwegian Solidarity Comittee for Latin America.
