Colors
Set in a Brazil where the economy is blossoming and whose people are celebrating the upcoming World Cup and Olympics, the black comedy Colors draws a portrait of a young, hapless trio in São Paulo who have missed out on their share of the affluence. Luca is a tattoo artist without customers, living off his grandmother’s retirement money. Luiz is a petty criminal who consistently fails in his half-hearted schemes. His girlfriend Luara takes photos of the airplanes departing outside her window, dreaming of travel and adventure. In black and white, we follow the three protagonists through defeat after defeat. Although the plot is clearer and more focused, the film is closely related to Richard Linklater’s classic Slacker (1991). Despite Luca, Luiz and Laura’s almost overwhelming ineptness, Colors is filled with warmth and empathy. htb
