In the small port town of Tirebolu, on the northeast coast of Turkey, people live small village lives. The fog sweeps across the landscape, Ayshe cares for her older adoptive sister, and every now and then Mehmet, the boy from next door, drops by to listen to the old women’s stories. Mehmet also likes hanging out with his vagabond friend Chengiz, and together they gaze out at the horizon hoping that Chengiz’s executed father will return. But shadows of the past rest upon the village. Ayshe’s real name is Eleni, and she is the daughter of Greeks. Her parents died during the First World War, and benevolent Turks adopted her. But why must Ayshe hide her true identity? cb
