Tears and laughter, passionate love, family trouble and lots of intrigues: The Wedding Party is a perfect example of the romantic drama comedies that have become one of the most popular genres of the Nollywood film industry. Produced by Mo Abudu, who has established her own film empire in Lagos, the film has a considerably larger budget than most other Nollywood productions, and has won acclaim far beyond Nigeria after its premiere at last year's Toronto film festival.

The Wedding Party tells the story of 24 year-old Dunni, who is about to marry her great love, Dozie. Dunni is the very definition of a bridezilla, but soon finds herself dealing with a long line of problems that threaten to thwart her great expectations. Has Dozie actually broken the vow of chastity at his own bachelor party? Can the bride and groom’s parents get along even though they belong to opposite ends of the social spectrum? And what do you do when your father in law’s mistress tries to crash the wedding?

Underneath all its slapstick humour and colourful extravaganza, the film has a strong political undercurrent, and has quite a lot to say about topics such as class differences, sexual liberation, and gender equality. Johanne Svendsen Rognlien
