Tigers Are Not Afraid
Tigers Are Not Afraid is a dark adventure that could be taken right off the page of a Stephen King novel. Set in the shadow of Mexico's drug wars, it follows Estrella, a eleven year-old girl who, after her mother disappears, starts hearing her voice at night and being haunted by mystical beings. Her mother's disappearance also leads Estrella to make acquaintance with a gang of homeless kids, led by the charismatic young boy Shine. He is on the run from the infamous gangster Caco, and to escape his wrath, Estrella and the boys must use all their street smartness. However, the voices Estrella hears and the ghostly beings that she senses, urge her to take revenge instead.
The elements of magic realism take nothing away from the realism of the story; after all, we know that ghost towns and criminal gangs are a part of everyday life in parts of Mexico. Tigers Are Not Afraid will make your heart skip an extra beat, but also show you glimpses of hope. SZG
