In Broker Koreeda asks: What is society's responsibility for young ones that aren't taken care of. And how can we do a better job!

The Korean superstar Song Kang-ho won Best Actor prize in Cannes this year for his brilliant role in this film, and that with the Films from the South festival favorite Hirokazu Kore-eda as director. The first film so far for Koreeda in South Korea, and a stunning proof that the country now is the hotspot of the international film industry. Broker was very well received by the festival audience and confirms Kore-eda as one of the greatest directors of our time.

With a thread back to Shoplifters (2018) – about the «kidnapping» of a young girl from a family that don't know how to take care of her – the focus now is on a couple of guys doing «business» on mothers that for various reasons abandon their newborns in so called «Baby-boxes». When our baby is left in a box outside a church the guys strike in their pursuit of making a deal with a new set of parents that aren't able to have children the old fashioned way. This leads to complications. Especially when the baby's mother joins the search for new parents for the child. Both with tragedies and a lot of humor we are on a roadmovie that offers a lot.

Koreeda follows his exciting trail of telling genuine and relevant stories about children that are not taken care of in Japanese and Korean society. His angle is to challenge the official story by choosing «thugs» do a much better job in taking care of the small ones than the ones that should be doing the job. With Kore-eda’s unique ability to convey reflections and strong emotions on this issue, we get a thrilling story that grasps a deeply troublesome problem we find all over the world.
