The Takeover
At the very bottom of the international democracy index is Afghanistan. A country where women are not allowed to get an education and the roots of society have been torn up for decades. The images of the Taliban's dramatic takeover in 2021 have stuck with many, and in The Takeover, which recently won the Jury Prize at the renowned Sheffield Doc/Fest, we get up close to desperate activists, convinced extremists and ordinary people. Director Anders Hammer (Oscar-nominated for Do Not Split in 2021) has previously shown that he is able to get closer to historical events than most directors, and the film has become an intimate, shocking and at times both absurd and surreal portrait of these dramatic events.
