In this documentary, we get to know Afro-Colombian activist Francia Márquez and the long journey she had to take to become one of Colombia's most important politicians.

Igualada – a derogatory term for someone who acts as is if they are entitled to rights which they, based on sex, class and/or race, «do not deserve».

For Columbian politician Francia Márquez, however, it has become a badge of honour.

Documentary filmmaker Juan Mejía Botero has known and documented her for 15 years, from her earlier days of activism in the community she grew up in, to the 2022 presidential election, which she entered as a candidate. Her journey has been long and perilous, especially as an Afro-Columbian woman squaring up against a conservative-leaning political climate, but Igualada proves that even that which seems impossible may well come through when people gather around the hope for something better.

«Márquez’s passion for breaking the chains that bind the oppressed is infectious, it allows Igualada to serve as a vital reminder that each person has the power to help evoke the change—no matter what they call you in the process.»
