Smugglers
South Korea, 1970s. In a small, peaceful seaside village, a group of female free divers becomes unexpectedly involved in a high-stakes smuggling case.
Stylistically, we are in Tarantino territory with this highly entertaining action-comedy set in the 1970s, in the far north of South Korea. Choon-ja and Jon-sook are friends who make a living as free divers. Seafood is their main target, but when the local factory releases chemicals into the sea, their livelihood disappears. However, this creates new and unexpected opportunities when a gang discovers that the polluted seabed is perfect for dropping off stolen goods. The girls seize the chance to make good money, but are unaware of the consequences.
The blockbuster director has said of the film: «Why not make a movie with 70s fashion and music, women living by the sea, innocent people shaken by brutal crime, and the chance to unleash romance, suspense, and humor with the ocean as a backdrop» It works, and is highly entertaining.
