The Legend of the Vagabond Queen of Lagos
The Agbojowo collective made their debut at the Toronto Film Festival with their protest film against the Nigerian government and the destruction of many shantytowns in the country.
Although the film is fiction, it is based on the true story of the fishermen living along the waterfront in Lagos. In 2016 and 2017, the 30,000 residents were violently displaced. The film is a gripping magical-realist tale, beautifully shot, and with a momentum resembling a thriller. At its center is a fantastic performance by Temi Ami-Williams in the role of Jawu, a grieving mother seeking revenge.
