Oceania: Journey to the Center
Kiribati is a paradise on earth, but in a few years the entire island nation will be uninhabitable. What will happen to the locals then?
Over the course of eight years, we follow life on the small island nation of Kiribati in Micronesia in the Pacific Ocean. The surroundings are paradisiacal, with crystal blue water, palm trees, and scenic beaches. But in a few years, all of this will be uninhabitable. We meet a mother and her adult son, who are both working hard to preserve their culture, livelihood, and independence, and we gain a deeply moving insight into how overconsumption, colonialism, and the depletion of natural resources affect the most vulnerable island states.
