A dark and beautiful fairytale set in Francoist Spain
10 year old Ofelia and her pregnant, sickly mother move in with her new stepfather, the cruel Captain Vidal. It has been five years since the civil war ended, and as an officer of the armed police force, Vidal takes great pleasure in crushing the members of the resistance he is able to track down.
In the face of these difficult times, Ofelia finds herself in a strange labyrinth. Here, she meets a magical creature, a faun, who tells her that she is the princess of the underworld. For her to return to her rightful throne, she must conquer three tasks – a journey she embarks on with curiosity and courage alike.
Even now, well into a lengthy and critically lauded career, Pan’s Labyrinth remains an artistic highlight of Guillermo del Toro’s filmography, elevated by visuals which are as dread-inducing as they are beautiful. It also serves as an excellent example of how fantastical elements do not necessarily undermine serious topics, but may also enhance them.
Lastly, it is difficult not to laud the film’s monster designs, brought to life with a mix of practical and digital effects, as some of the very best ever brought to the silver screen.
