Gabriel Mascaro

Gabriel Mascaro (1983) is a visual artist and filmmaker from Recife, Brazil. His work is characterized by a critical interpretation of contemporaneity, exploring the relationship between micropolitics and everyday life through film, installation, and photography.

His films and video installations have been presented at major festivals and exhibitions, including Venice, IDFA, Locarno, Toronto, Rotterdam, MoMA, Oberhausen, Clermont-Ferrand, the Guggenheim, the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, Panorama da Arte Brasileira at the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo, and the São Paulo Art Biennale.

Mascaro has participated in the Videobrasil Artistic Residency at Videoformes in France and the Wexner Center for the Arts in the USA. As a screenwriter, he has received the Hubert Bals Fund (Netherlands) and Cinereach (USA) awards.

His films have won more than 50 awards. In April 2016, a retrospective of his work was held at Lincoln Center in New York.
