This year's festival program is out now
The festival program for Films from South 2024 is finally ready.
We welcome you to the 34th edition of Films from the South, the oldest film festival in Oslo. This year the festival lasts from the 9th to the 17th of November, and has over 90 films on the program, in addition to exciting guests, parties and events.
You can still purchase festival passes, they cost 1475kr and give you access to all our ordinary screenings. For special events like the Mexican party at Cosmopolite you can purchase discounted tickets.
Award sections
At Films from the South we have three different awards: The main competition, The Silver Mirror, which is awarded to the best of ten international fiction films. Then there’s Doc:South, which is given to the best of ten documentary films. The last award, the audience award, is awarded to a film voted as the best by our audience.

Three selected films from the main competition
ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT
The winner of the Grand Prix at this year's Cannes film festival opens the Films from the South.
Get ready to be transported to the metropolis of Mumbai, where the lives of three hardworking nurses are portrayed with tenderness, humor, and joy.
The first screening of the film is on the 9th of November at 18:00 in Klingenberg kino. After the film there will be an after party at Becco from 21:00
BLACK DOG
After being released from prison, Lang returns to his hometown. The Beijing Olympics are just around the corner, and the city is to be cleaned up. He is assigned to the group tasked with removing stray dogs but finds an unexpected friend.
The film premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes in 2024, where it won the top prize.

THE SEED OF THE SACRED FIG
When a father is promoted to judge during the riots following the killing of Mahsa Amini, a gun mysteriously disappears. His suspicion falls on his daughters, who secretly support the protests.
The film works equally well as an intense thriller and as an allegory for the consequences of the oppression of women in a religious patriarchy. The film premiered in the main competition at Cannes, where it won two awards.
The film is a part of the Silver Screen section, as well as a retrospective on the filmography of one of Iran's foremost contemporary filmmakers, Mohammad Rasoulof.

DAHOMEY//The Critical Room
What do we make of the fact that so much art from other countries is in the museums of former colonial powers?
November 2021, Benin. 26 cultural artifacts are returned from a French museum, sparking a debate about what this action means. Is it a beginning, symbolic politics, or an insult?
The critical room is our arena for debate and conversation. We invite interesting guests both domestic and from abroad to discuss important topics highlighted in both documentary and fiction films. On the 15th of November at 17:45 we will screen DAHOMEY and host a panel discussion about plundered artifacts in western museums.
FARMING THE REVOLUTION
The winner of this year's best international documentary at the world's most renowned documentary festival, Hot Docs, is a harrowing film about a democracy on its knees, but also about those who are trying to make a difference.
The film is shown both as a part of Doc:South and our Spotlight India section. The director, Nishta Jain, is one of Indias leading documentary film creators. Jain will be visiting the Films from the South and participating in several events throughout the festival.

AGENT OF HAPPINESS
In this heartwarming film, we follow the duo Amar and Gunaraj, employed by the Ministry of Happiness to measure the country's joy, one household at a time.
In Bhutan, people's standard of living is measured by the population's happiness. The duo travels through the majestic Himalayan mountains, where they meet various individuals who each have their dreams and wishes for life.
This film is shown as a part of Doc:South and the section Spotlight Bhutan. In addition, we are hosting a talk on happiness in the basement of the Vika cinema on the 10th of November, between a screening of WISDOM OF HAPPINESS and AGENT OF HAPPINESS.

LAGAAN
An arrogant British officer challenges an Indian village to a high-stakes cricket match in this colorful, entertaining, and thrilling story set in colonial times during the 1890s.
The film is screened on the 11th of November at 18:00, with a performance from the vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and film composer Tejaswinee Kelkar and a conversation about the movie between the minister of culture, Lubna Bobby Jaffery, and Kelkar.

MEXICAN PARTY AT COSMOPOLITE
On the 16th of November, we welcome you to an evening that celebrates the best that Mexican culture has to offer in Oslo. Get ready to enjoy some great food, an entrancing film and music that will make you want to move your hips!
We offer up the the incredible story of how Mexico, in 2010, became the first country in the world to be added to UNESCO's prestigious World Heritage List in the film THE MICHOACAN FILE, as well as authentic mexican catering, a religious ceremony and different musical acts.

KOREAN DAY
In collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to Norway we invite our audience to a day filled with the best Oslo has to offer of Korean cultural experiences. There will be screenings of new and old film favourites, shows, activities and food.
For example we will screen the bloodcurling EXHUMA, the intense THE SUSPECT, the modern classic PARASITE, the nerve-wracking A HARD DAY and more!
