The Seed of the Sacred Fig
When a family father is promoted to judge during the riots following the killing of Mahsa Amini, a gun mysteriously disappears in the home. Suspicion falls on the daughters, who secretly support the protests.
Iman works as a judge for the Iranian clergy and becomes increasingly paranoid when his gun goes missing one day. He suspects his wife and daughters, and therefore enforces strict rules at home. Masterfully, a story unfolds about how a family slowly but surely implodes. The film works equally well as an intense thriller and as an allegory for the consequences of the oppression of women in a religious patriarchy. The film premiered in the main competition at Cannes, where it won two awards.
