Girls of the Sun tells of dramatic events and destinies that seldom reach the headlines. Mathilde, a French war photographer, decides to follow a female Kurdish battalion that battles ISIS on the border between Iraq and Turkey. It is led by Bahar, a woman who herself lost everything then the Islamists invaded her home town, killed all the men and enslaved most women and children. Now, the war-ridden women decide to take on the town to rescue the civilians, including Bahar’s own son. This gripping drama about survival against all odds screened in the competition programme at this year’s Cannes festival.
