Parasite
Watch Bong Joon-ho's masterpiece PARASITE in theaters again during this year's Film from the South.
Meet Kim Ki-taek, an unemployed father who lives with his wife and two grown children in a run-down basement apartment. His wife is also without a job, and the family's future prospects are bleak. Through a friend, the son suddenly gets the chance to become a private tutor for the teenage daughter of a wealthy family. He quickly succeeds in the job, and this opens up opportunities for the rest of the family to fill various roles in the rich family's home: the daughter as a tutor for the youngest son, the father as a driver, and the mother as a housekeeper. It seems like a dream has come true, but it ends as a nightmare.
It is an almost incredible achievement to describe class society in such a meticulously crafted and gripping way as Bong Joon-ho does in Parasite. Where others might get stuck in predictable portrayals of the struggle between rich and poor, Bong sets a completely new standard by elevating the conflict to another level—using effective elements from many genres.
