Day after...

The chaotic three-day journey on an old two-deck paddle steamer from the capital Dhaka to Khulna province has been hailed as the most accomplished and memorable non-fiction venture of the year by film magazine Screen Daily.

Director Kamar Ahmad Simon is passionate about mixing documentary with fiction and creating a distinctive picture of reality. For that, he has trained actors separately, so that no one could know who was real and who is fictional. The travelers create a mini-society, which reflects contemporary trends and challenges. The boat carries both concrete and metaphorical meaning for the film, which offers many allegorical implications that one can ponder over.

Day After... had its world premiere in November 2021 in Amsterdam. The trilogy project it is a part of was invited to La Atelier in Cannes 2017 as one of the 15 promising scripts. The film project has been awarded both the best project award and other scholarship awards, including at the Sundance Film Festival and the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam. Day After... was screened as part of Locarno Open Doors Hub where it won the Best Project Award and Arte Prix. The film was part of the International Competition of Camden International Film Festival (CIFF), where it won the prestigious Harrell Award for the best film in 2022

Kamar Ahmad Simon is a writer, director, and architect. He grew up in an orthodox Muslim family in postcolonial Dhaka with an abusive father, from whom he found refuge in nature, close to animals and the boats waiting to leave the port. As a newly qualified architect, he discovered the cinema world at local film festivals and was truly captivated. He debuted with Are You Listening! in 2012. Despite the lack of film schools in Bangladesh, Simon has managed to receive many prestigious scholarships from Western European film circles.
