Rule 34

Thought-provoking about violence, sex work and law in Brazil. Hard kinks and feminism are both on display in Júlia Murat’s drama about a young woman’s life working as both a camgirl and public defender.

Simone is a 23-year-old camgirl with a loyal fanbase. She also just passed her bar exam and has become a public defender, with her heart set on women’s rights. The workdays are spent on endless conversations on how to improve the legal system and trying to help victims of domestic violence. Free time is spent with Coyote and Lucia, her friends and lovers, and video chats with kink photographer Nat. Simone develops an interest in BDSM. Frustrated with how futile her day job feels, she chases increasingly extreme forms of pleasure, but how far is too far?

Rule 34 deals with difficult, yet important and relevant, issues in contemporary Brazil, and Simone’s different sides are not defined as contradictions. The film was awarded the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival.

13. NOV – Intro, Nytfestivalen

Before the screening of RULE 34 Sunday NOV 13th at 21.00 at Vika, Kjersti Helgeland from Nytfestivalen introduces the film. Helgeland is initiator for Nytfestivalen and Nyt stiftelse for positiv seksualitet og seksuell nytelse. Through projects and events she wishes to contribute to forward positive sexuality, reduce taboo and create openness around the diversity of sexuality.

Director

Júlia Murat (b. 1979) is a Brazilian director, writer and producer. Her work entails commercials, documentaries, short films and video-installations. After directing and producing her first feature Found Memories (2011) she went on to create the production house Esquina Filmes. Rule 34 is her third feature film.
