Nishtha Jain
Nishtha Jain is a leading documentary filmmaker from India best known for her multi-award-winning documentaries The Golden Thread (2022), Gulabi Gang (2012), Lakshmi and Me (2007), and City of Photos (2004). Nishtha’s latest film, Farming the Revolution, had its World Premiere at Hot Docs 2024 and won the Best International Feature Documentary Award.
Nishtha’s films interrogate lived experience at the intersection of gender, caste, and class. They explore the political in the personal and uncover the mechanisms of privilege. Lately, she has focused her lens on social movements and the lives of the working class. Foregrounding her subjectivity, her films are immersive, focused on the quotidian and intimate.
Jain's films have garnered critical acclaim and have screened widely at international film festivals, art-house cinemas, and broadcast on TV networks. She’s a Chicken & Egg Awardee (2020); Member of the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences (AMPAS); Film Independent Global Media Maker Fellow (2019-20); and Recipient of the Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Fellowship (2019).
The director will be present for an Artist Talk, and will take part in a panel conversation connected to her most recent film, Farming the Revolution.
