Films & Debates at Films From the South

Since 2003, Films From the South have explored social issues regarding Asia, Africa, and Latin America through our forum for film and debate, The Critical Room (TCR). This year, our TCR programme is more radical and controversial than ever. We invite you to a series of screenings of engaging, stimulating, and hard-hitting films, followed by talks and debates with filmmakers and experts.

All six events under the TCR banner this year deal in some way with activism and revolution. We trace the history of racism from colonial times right up until today in Raoul Peck’s monumental, four-part documentary Exterminate All the Brutes; the director himself has called it the origin story of white supremacy. We also hand the mic to a mix of young and older activists, who use their powerful voices to make their demands for a better world heard in closed rooms and political power centres. We meet feminist imam Seyran Ateş who is fighting for a sexual revolution within Islam; young activists from all corners of the world in Bigger Than Us; Indian Dalit women who run their own news organisation in Writing With Fire; and activist and academic Eric Lai, who will comment on the struggle for a free Hong Kong in relation to the documentary When a City Rises.

INSPIRING DEBATES

Lasse Skagen is the Artistic Director at The Oslo Festival Agency and Head of Programming at Films From the South, and has worked with The Critical Room since it was first introduced. He believes this year’s programme holds the power to inspire in many different ways:

– As Head of Programming I am very impressed by the series of critical events that our Project Manager has produced for the festival this year. With activism and revolution as a base, we meet people who firmly stand their ground when faced with powers much larger than themselves. This is inspiring and helps raise knowledge that there are non-weaponised wars to be won even if you face great opposition.

This year’s Project Manager for The Critical Room is Uma Feed Tjelta, who is also part of the programme council for Films From the South. Here’s what she has to say about her work with developing the programme:

– As I was watching films with the programme council, the overall theme of The Critical Room soon became apparent on its own; there were so many films portraying young people who are working hard in their local communities to create some positive change in a bleak situation.

– The integrity of democracy and personal freedoms is in decline on a global scale, as seen in the Freedom in the World report. To me, these are such important issues to raise during Films From the South. The festival’s slogan is “See the world from a different angle”, so we have a serious responsibility to broaden perspectives and help encourage our very knowledgeable audiences to take responsibility in their own lives, in whatever ways they are able. It’s really important for a big organisation like Films From the South to give a platform to these powerful voices – to illustrate, put into perspective, and clarify for our audience that we do really live in the most privileged part of the world.

– I think that director Raoul Peck hits the nail on the head in his four-part documentary series Exterminate All the Brutes, when he says: “It’s not knowledge we lack. What is missing is the courage to understand what we know and to draw conclusions”. As a global community, we need brave individuals who will step up and try make a difference!

ENGAGING GUESTS

World-famous filmmaker Peck (I Am Not Your Negro, 2016) is one of the big names on the TCR programme this year. We will be screening his four-part documentary in its entirety on the 14^th of November, at the Oslo Cinematheque. We are also inviting you to a digital talk about the historical and lasting ties between colonialism and racism.

Another high-profile guest is the controversial lawyer and feminist imam Seyran Ateş from Germany, who is visiting Oslo in November to take part in Films From the South the The Critical Room. As a direct consequence of her work for an inclusive and diverse form of Islam, she lives under constant police protection. Norwegian-Turkisk director Nefise Özkal Lorentzen has made the documentary Seyran Ateş: Sex, Revolution and Islam, and we are hosting two separate panel debates with Ateş as part of The Critical Room. One of our digital guests is activist and scholar Eric Lai, Hong Kong Law Fellow at the Center for Asian Law at Georgetown University, DC. Lai has been active in the fight for human rights and democracy in his native Hong Kong, and will participate in a live, digital conversation after a screening of the film When A City Rises. The film deals with the 2019 protests in Hong Kong.

Films From the South are also screening the fiction film Buddha Collapsed Out of Shame, directed by Hanah Makhmalbaf. We first screened the film upon its release in 2007, and it is once again painfully relevant as a timeless testimony on the lives of girls and women under Taliban rule. We are therefore screening the film again, and hosting a discussion about the present situation in Afghanistan. Further, we are shining a light on the current conditions for the free press with the documentary Writing With Fire, followed by a live conversation with the filmmakers. The film and its themes are no less interesting in light of the recent announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize being awarded to people who are fighting for freedom of speech. We will also be taking a look at different forms of activism here in Norway, inspired by the documentary Bigger Than Us – a portrait of young activists from around the globe.

INSPIRERENDE DEBATTER

Lasse Skagen er kunstnerisk leder i Stiftelsen Festivalkontoret og programsjef for Film fra Sør, og har jobbet med Det kritiske rom siden det startet opp. Han mener det er mye inspirasjon å hente i årets debattprogram:

– Som programsjef er jeg veldig stolt av den serien av samfunnskritiske arrangementer som prosjektlederen vår har utviklet for Film fra Sør i år. Med aktivisme og revolusjon som grunntema, møter vi mennesker som står klippefaste i møtet med krefter som er mye større enn dem selv. Det gir inspirasjon og formidler kunnskap om at det finnes uvæpna kriger man kan vinne, selv om overmakten er stor.

Prosjektleder for Det kritiske rom har i år vært Uma Feed Tjelta, som også er med i Film fra Sørs programråd. Hun forteller om hva hun har lagt vekt på å løfte fram i programmet.

– Da jeg så filmer med programrådet presset temaet for DKR seg fram selv, fordi det var så mange filmer som portretterte unge mennesker som jobber på grasrotnivå for å skape endring i en drittverden.

– Demokratiet og personlig frihet er på en nedadgående kurve som bare blir brattere og brattere. Det kunne NRK rapportere tidligere i år, med bakgrunn i den globale Freedom in the World-rapporten.

– Dette synes jeg er viktig å løfte frem under Film fra Sør, som med slagordet «se verden fra en annen vinkel» har et ansvar for å vise fram ulike vinkler og oppfordre våre allerede kunnskapsrike publikummere til å til å ta ansvar i eget liv, på de måtene man kan. Jeg syns det er viktig for en aktør som Film fra Sør å gi en plattform til disse sterke stemmene for å illustrere, sette i perspektiv og understreke for vårt publikum at vi virkelig bor i den mest privilegerte delen av verden.

– Regissør Raoul Peck sier det treffende i sin miniserie Exterminate All the Brutes: «Det har aldri vært mangel på kunnskap». Vi som verdenssamfunn trenger modige mennesker med pågangsmot som vil gjøre noe mer!

ENGASJERENDE GJESTER

Den verdenskjente filmskaperen Peck (I Am Not Your Negro, 2016) er én av filmskaperne som er aktuelle i Det kritiske rom. Vi viser nemlig hele den firedelte dokumentaren Exterminate All the Brutes på Cinemateket i Oslo søndag 14. november. I den forbindelse inviterer vi også til digital samtale om de historiske og vedvarende lenkene mellom kolonialisme og rasisme.

En annen profilert gjest er den kontroversielle juristen og feministiske imamen Seryan Ateş fra Tyskland, som tar turen til Oslo i november for å delta på Film fra Sør og Det kritiske rom. Som en direkte konsekvens av sitt arbeid for en inkluderende og mangfoldig islam lever hun under konstant politibeskyttelse. Ateş er skildret i den nye dokumentaren til Nefise Özkal Lorentzen, Seyran Ateş: Sex, Revolution and Islam, og stiller til to separate panelsamtaler som er del av Det kritiske rom. Av andre gjester kan nevnes aktivist og akademiker Eric Lai, forsker ved Georgetown Center for Asian Law i USA og aktiv i kampen for menneskerettigheter og demokrati i Hongkong. Lai deltar digitalt på DKR i samtale etter visning av filmen When A City Rises, som skildrer 2019-demonstrasjonene i Hongkong.

Film fra Sør viser også filmen Buddha kollapset i ren skam av regissør Hanah Makhmalbaf. Vi viste filmen første gang da den kom ut i 2007, men den har nå fått fornyet aktualitet som et tidløst vitnesbyrd om unge jenter og kvinners situasjon under Taliban. Derfor viser vi filmen på ny, og inviterer samtidig til panelsamtale om den nåværende situasjonen i Afghanistan. Vi setter også fokus på den frie pressens kår med filmen Writing With Fire og åpen samtale med regissørene i etterkant. Filmen og dens tematikk er ikke mindre interessant i lys av den nylige tildelingen av Nobels fredspris til forkjempere for ytringsfrihet. Vi tar også turen innom forskjellige former for aktivisme her hjemme, inspirert av dokumentaren Bigger Than Us som portretterer unge aktivister fra hele verden.
