After a one night stand, Giovana and Yago are awakened by a threatening alarm. Everyone in town must seek cover in the nearest building and close all windows and doors immediately. A large pink cloud that allegedly kills humans in 10 seconds is rapidly approaching the city. No one knows where the poisonous cotton candy cloud comes from or what it is, but the nightmare-like phenomenon sends everyone into an isolation that, to put it mildly, puts the inbabitant’s patience and psyche to the test.

The Brazilian sci-fi drama The Pink Cloud feels eerily relevant in 2021. Isolation is no longer unknown to any of us, but The Pink Cloud provides a nuanced picture of the effects long-term isolation can have. The film centers around a random “couple” trapped in Giovana's mother's house, where they spent their first steamy night. It is an intense film about relations, beautifully wrapped in a powder-pink light from the ever-threatening cloud of poison – with claustrophobia vibrating in the walls. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January this year.

Director

Iuli Gerbase (b. 1990) is a Brazilian director and screenwriter who has already made a name for herself with several critically acclaimed short films. The Pink Cloud is her first feature film, and it has already been awarded Best Film in the International Competition at the Sofia International Film Festival and for Best Latinamerican Feature Film at Catalonian International Film Festival in Sitges. This certainly shows that Gerbase is a filmmaker to keep an eye on in the years to come.
